The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is the world's most famous chronograph watch. Rivaled only by Rolex's legendary Daytona, the Speedmaster Professional ranks among the few watches that members of the general public - not just watch collectors - would recognize. But Omega Speedmaster history is rich with variety, innovation, and styles. Tonight's show is for fans of Omega watches who want alternatives to the same old Moonwatch!
Tim Mosso recommends that any search for an Omega Speedmaster include one of the 44.25mm ceramic options. Both the Speedmaster Moonwatch Dark Side of the Moon and Grey Side of the Moon were landmark chronographs for Omega. With scratch resistance, wrist presence, and automatic chronometer caliber 9300, the ceramic Moonwatch family offers style and versatility for those who don't routinely fly with NASA. Buyers who want an edgier Speedmaster should consider the Moonwatch Dark Side of The Moon Apollo 8.
The Omega Speedmaster Caliber 321 "Ed White" may be the best reedition luxury watch of all time. Based on the pre-moon Omega Speedmaster 105.003, the Ed White bears the name of the American astronaut who made it famous during the USA's first space walk in 1965. Moreover, the Speedmaster Caliber 321 revives the famous Lemania-based column wheel chronograph that had been discontinued in the Speedmaster series since 1968. Available on a limited basis for a price of $15,400, this Speedmaster is waitlisted at Omega watch dealers. And due to its handcrafted construction process, the "Ed" is likely to remain rare.
Not every Omega chronograph is designed for the mainstream. The 2021 Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope is a prime example of Omega playing to a niche audience. Although a very contemporary 43mm in diameter, the Chronoscope appeals to vintage watch enthusiasts with a no-date dial, dual register chronograph, manual wind Master Chronometer caliber, and a triple-play of tachymeter, telemeter, and pulsometer dial scales. Given recent bloat in Omega watch thickness, the manual-wind Speedmaster Chronoscope is a breath of fresh air with a reasonable 13.2mm thick profile.
Don't underestimate the value of a well-crafted neo-vintage watch. Both the 2016 Omega Speedmaster CK2998 and the 2017 CK2915 offer substantial nostalgia for watch collectors who prefer to avoid the stress and demands of shopping for true vintage watches.
