Rolex vs Omega hits the airwaves tonight as Tim Mosso discusses his favorite dive watches for $15,000 or less. High luxury dive watches are the ultimate aspirational sports watch options, and for summer 2022, Tim recommends a few of his favorites. Omega Seamaster, Rolex Submariner, Rolex Deepsea, Glashutte Original SeaQ, Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, and Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight all make appearances on tonight's live streamed show.
Rolex builds sports watches as a rule, and among those sports watches, the dive watches rule. The Rolex Submariner launched in 1953 as one of the first modern-style diving watches. Over the years, the Rolex Sub has evolved but has never broken from the basic formula of an automatic movement, a stainless steel case, a rotating dive bezel, and - more often than not - a full Rolex Oyster bracelet. Tonight's show highlight's the Rolex Submariner, often described as the "No Date" Submariner. This Rolex Submariner has a retail price of $8,950, but scarcity at dealers and crushing demand mean that used prices for the Submariner 124060 range from $13,000 to $16,000
Rolex offers the Sea-Dweller line for those who want more size or capability than a standard 41m Submariner can provide. The Rolex Deepsea D-Blue 136660 is the liveliest and most appealing version of Rolex's biggest watch. With a water resistance rating of 3,900 meters and an integral helium escape valve, the Deepsea Sea Dweller is the most durable dive watch Rolex offers. Its 44mm case is constructed of stainless steel with a titanium caseback. The bracelet includes a Glidelock sizing slider that can be adjusted while the watch remains on the list older versions of the Rolex Deepsea also include a Fliplock dive extension within the clasp. Rolex employs its chronometer certified automatic caliber 3235 to power the Deepsea.
Omega offers two hardcore professional dive watches. The first is tecnhically called the Seamaster 1200M, but all watch collectors call it the Omega "PloProf." Based on the design of the 1970s Seamaster 600m Plongeur Professionel, the new Omega PloProf has been available in titanium since its 2015 redesign. A no-date titanium dial, "Shark Proof" mesh bracelet with advanced diving clasp, and a locking dive bezel give this watch a no-nonsense appearance. For good measure, the PloProf includes a helium escape valve for professional saturation divers.
While the PloProf long reigned as Omega's ultimate dive watch, the arrival of the 2022 Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep has changed the balance of power in Bienne. Each Seamaster Ultra Deep includes a 45.5mm case that boasts 6,000 meters of rated water resistance. As ISO 6425 dive watches, these timepieces are tested to 125% of rated water resistance before they reach clients. Omega co-axial Master Chronometer caliber 8912 provides precision timekeeping.
Stainless steel Seamaster Ultra Deep variants can be purchased on matching steel bracelets, rubber straps, or textile straps. The unique titanium Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep can be fitted exclusively with a NATO strap due to its special lug design. Gradient dials with lacquered colors, blackened titanium dials, and a white lacquered dial can be requested by watch collectors. Due to its extreme hermetic seal, the Ultra Deep cannot absorb helium, so it does not require a gas release valve for saturation diving.
